Heavy Duty Trucks Weigh More than Regular Trucks
The majority of full-size trucks also have heavy-duty versions. For example, the Chevy Silverado 3500 HD. These trucks are constructed to be sturdier and more durable than other trucks. They have reinforced chassis, heavier engines, and an overall bigger and stronger body. All of this extra reinforcement also makes them heavier.
Cab and Bed Size
The other factor that affects curb weight is the size of the bed and cab on a particular truck. For example, a four-door super crew cab style will be heavier than a regular cab truck with only two doors. Similarly, a truck with an extra-long bed will be heavier than a truck with a regular or short bed.
4×4 Trucks vs. 2×4 Trucks
4WD trucks will always weigh more than a 2WD truck of the exact same trim, engine, and configuration. The transfer case is one of the weight culprits, but 4WD trucks also tend to have a lot of extra reinforcements throughout the vehicle to deal with off-road adventures. Because they lack these extra parts, 2×4 trucks are lighter and can typically tow and haul more than their 4×4 counterparts.
Engine Size
The engine definitely affects the curb weight of a pickup truck as well. Smaller four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines weigh less than eight-cylinder engines on average. But, the other disparity is between gas engines and diesel engines. The latter are built heavier and sturdier to withstand the higher compression and torque that diesels have. This naturally increases the curb weight of a truck with this engine.
Trim Level
The extras that come with different trim levels don’t affect the curb weight as much as the other items mentioned. For example, leather seats don’t weigh much more than cloth. The higher trim level you get might have some effect as extra systems or heavier parts are added.
